Asia Pacific Insurance Tax Leader, PwC Hong Kong
John Chan is PwC’s Asia Pacific Insurance Tax Leader and a Hong Kong Tax Partner, bringing extensive expertise in the insurance and asset management industries. With over 25 years of tax advisory experience, he has held positions at another Big Four firm, and senior in-house roles in Hong Kong, the UK, and the USA.
Prior to rejoining PwC in 2019, John spent over 14 years as Asia Head of Tax for a global insurance group with a significant presence in the region. He was responsible for the group's insurance and asset management tax affairs, advising the board and senior management team on tax matters, and developing and executing mitigation strategies related to M&A, bancassurance, reinsurance, fund setup, fund structure optimisation, indirect tax, tax audits, and more. He also oversaw the insurer's FATCA and CRS compliance programmes.
Since returning to PwC, John has served a diverse range of insurance and asset management clients with international and Mainland China headquarters. His expertise encompasses tax-efficient holding structures, M&A due diligence, cross-border tax planning, Pillar 2, and more.
John is a key member of the global PwC insurance tax community, providing bespoke tax advice, conducting policy studies, and engaging in advocacy efforts for insurance clients. He is also a key member of PwC's in-house Greater Bay Area Financial Services Team, focused on understanding and advising on GBA policies and engaging with stakeholders.
John has held leadership positions within the Capital Market Tax Committee (CMTC), serving as an Executive Committee member and Co-Chairman of the Insurance Sub-Committee. He is also a member of the American Institute of CPAs.
