“My experience with learning Japanese, whose grammar is cryptic and complicated, enables me to tap into the logic of audit work and face with difficulties and challenges in work head on.”

My name is Faye. I joined PwC in 2020 and I am a member of the Assurance team.

My major is Japanese Interpretation. I heard about the working environment and growth model at PwC when I was a student. I gave a shot at the campus recruitment and had little confidence as I did not major in accounting. I thought PwC preferred accounting and finance graduates, especially those with CPA certification. Surprisingly, I was lucky enough to be part of my dream company.

It seems that my major isn’t related to the work at Assurance, but when it comes to Japanese clients, I can better understand the client’s enterprise culture and adapt to its environment by leveraging my Japanese knowledge. I can quickly adapt to the work when I’m on-site at Japanese clients’ places, whether that is the day to day interaction with the client, or their working culture. For example, when we come across vouchers in Japanese during an audit, which is inevitable, my colleagues would ask me for help. I feel a sense of accomplishment where my expertise benefits the work and other members of the team.

As it turns out, the study of a foreign language and audit work have things in common. When I first started audit work, the colourful worksheets and pieces of data were so confusing that it reminded me of when I first started to learn the Japanese language, I had no idea how to make up a complete sentence with Japanese kana. It looked like fragmented pieces of information, and so I took a systematic approach and practised continuously to further my learning and master my skills. My experience of learning Japanese, with its cryptic and complicated grammar, enables me to tap into the logic of audit work, face difficulties and challenges in work head-on, and quickly fit into brand new environments.
