Two parallel reports focused on cross-border transactions opportunities in Western Europe for emerging markets acquirers. Despite a difficult transactions market and sluggish or negative economic growth in many countries, the trend of emerging markets companies acquiring Western European targets continued to grow in 2008 and we predict will be more significant still, in volume terms, in 2009. This pair of reports articulate our advice on how to avoid any potential cultural issues and to maximise transaction success from both perspectives. Other key messages include:
- Chinese private or state-owned enterprises accounted for one-fifth of the deals between 2003 and 2008; and
- In 2009, some larger Chinese enterprises are concentrating on streamlining their domestic operations and will be looking at foreign acquisitions on a more reactive basis, rather than proactive.
